Title: Australia Remembers – Anzac Day, Remembrance Day & War Memorials
by: Allison Paterson
Publisher: Big Sky Publishing

AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN
AND IN THE MORNING
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.

Every year there are special days when we remember all those who have fought in the past to keep Australia free and those who still fight today to keep us safe. On 25 April — Anzac Day — and on 11 November — Remembrance Day — we stop to think about those people and how much they have done for us. Anzac Day reminds us that, as Australians, we are proud of the Anzac spirit which has helped shape our traditions, our culture, and who we are. On Remembrance Day we honour all those who gave up so much for their country, especially those who lost their lives.

Author, Allison Paterson, has written a comprehensive and notable book about Anzac Day, Remembrance Day & War Memorials. The pages are adorned equally with factual text and full colour, absorbing images and illustrations which emphasise information on the pages, focussing young minds on the content of the page, enhancing comprehension of the text, creating a deeper understanding and connecting the reader to the human participants of war.

Allison Paterson examines in detail the origins and traditions of Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, exploring historical events, enriching knowledge, and engaging the reader by adding extra information on pages called ‘Did you know?’ as well as utilizing an interactive reader section on pages where the reader is asked questions, sometimes which lead the reader on a task to locate related topics on a map, or even in their local area.

commemoration

Australia Remembers – Anzac Day, Remembrance Day & War Memorials has 12 chapters of essential knowledge that will lead to a better understanding of Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, as well as a brilliant world map showing where wars occurred, and their dates, plus activities such as ‘Make a Poppy’, ‘Make Anzac Biscuits’, ‘Create a Poppy Wreath’ and ‘Creating a War Memorial’. There’s also a glossary, index and bibliography.

I highly recommend Australia Remembers: Anzac Day, Remembrance Day & War Memorials. It’s a powerful, exceptional resource that will have a high engagement of interest from anyone who reads it, and is a wonderful acknowledgement of past and present Australian Defence Force servicemen and women. It is because of the members of the ADF, that Australia is a safe and prosperous country.

We will remember them. Lest we forget.

Australia Remembers: Anzac Day, Remembrance Day & War Memorials is the first volume in a series, with the next volume, Australia Remembers: Customs and Traditions of the Australian Defence Force, to be released in 2019.

Book Week – a Grand, Contagious Celebration

Something beyond spectacular happens in schools around Australia in Book Week: schools burst at the seams with colour and energy as they celebrate all things books.

bookweek2017

CBCA Book Week. It’s joyous. It’s adventurous. It’s contagious.
But it can’t happen without authors and illustrators. And it most definitely can’t happen without readers.

I have spent more than half of my life reading books to children, literally reading thousands and thousands of picture books and chapter books, and this is what I have noticed over the years: there is change – books for children have grown; not only in the amount of books, but they are richer in content, and in quality of illustrations.

And here’s the thing … picture books, chapter books and novels have only continued to get better. When you think you have read the best book ever for children, along comes another one that tops it.

It still amazes me after all these years, and even in our age of technology, that one physical children’s book can get the attention of an entire class like a rock star. Eyes are focussed, and ears are listening, hanging off every word. Children listen in eagerness together, laugh together, cry together, and ask for one more page, or to read it again, or please can we read one more chapter

It’s about the connection of hearts and minds. Being on the same page. That’s what books do.

Every experienced teacher in the world has books in their teacher toolkit. Here’s why –
• If you want to settle a class after an energetic play time – read them a book.
• If you want to introduce a lesson, or a new concept with pizazz – start by reading them a book with content that will be in the lesson.
• If you want to bring the class together at the end of the day – read them a book.
• If you want a class to think deeply about a concept – take them inside a book so they can feel the emotion of a character and see the world through that character’s eyes, ears and heart.
• If you want to inspire children – read them a book.

book-2152349_1280

And here’s the thing … reading books creates empathy, kindness and understanding in the reader. Stories are a powerful. They engage, entertain, empower, explain, encourage and inspire. Research shows that book readers are smarter and kinder.

Imagine a classroom without books. A library without books. A home without books. A world without books – it would be akin to missing a heart.

Imagine a world without writers – wait, that means no books, no movies, no gaming, no lyrics to songs – after all, they are all built from the foundation of stories … what would the world become?

Parents, authors thank you for your amazing support with book week.

Teachers, authors salute you, and thank you for the part you play in spreading the love for reading, for sharing books created by authors, and for gifting students with the ability to read.

Children, you are the reason children’s authors write, and will continue to write, as you are more important than all the treasure in the world.

To finish, I’d like to share one precious memory of Book Week that stays with me – it’s a child who made his own costume from cardboard and alfoil. He had made it – not his mum, or his dad. His costume didn’t cost a lot, but it was filled with his imagination and with joy, created from the imagery of the words of his only book. It was simple, and yet, it was simply the best!

Title: Anzac Sons – Five Brothers on the Western Front
by: Allison Marlow Paterson
Publisher: Big Sky Publishing

…Well dear Jim it breaks my heart to write this letter. Our dear [brother] was killed yesterday morning at 5.30. The bullet killed him instantly and he never spoke a word. I had just left him and gone down the trench to see the other lads when I was called back. Oh Jim it is awful…Oh I do hope he is the last…

Anzac Sons – Five Brothers on the Western Front is a book to treasure. It’s a piece of Australian history that should never be forgotten.

Author, Allison Marlow Paterson has meticulously researched the true-life stories of five brothers – Charles, George, twins Percy and Allan, and Albert Marlow, who eventually enlisted in the Australian Army to serve their king and country, and fought in World War 1, one of the greatest tragedies and deadliest conflicts in history.

It wasn’t an easy entry into the army for the brothers. Jim and Percy weren’t tall enough and were rejected, Jim had poor eyesight and was rejected, and Charlie had dental problems, and was rejected. But as circumstances may have it, all five brothers ended up serving with the promise to return, words that were echoed the world over.

From there we follow the lives of the five brothers; three of who would never return to home soil. The full colour book is engaging and intriguing, filled with postcards, maps, photographs, papers, medals, telegrams, field service cards, identification bracelets, Red Cross reports, newspaper clippings and handwritten letters. Every page is attention capturing, inviting the reader to learn more, to know more, to feel more.

I highly recommend Anzac Sons – Five Brothers on the Western Front for all families and children, not only those who love Australian history. I also highly recommend it for educational use in primary and secondary schools, as it fits perfectly as a brilliant resource for Remembrance Day, as well the Australian Year 9 History curriculum, World War I.

Circle, a book review

cover-circle

Title: Circle
by: Jeannie Baker
Publisher: Walker Books

‘In a place where mud and sand become sea,
a godwit with white wing patches flies up with his flock.
The moment is right for the long journey north.’

A boy lies on his bed, a wheelchair beside him. His only wish is to fly. His mother wheels him to the beach, where the mud and sea become sand, and with his binoculars, he observes a flock of godwits.

One particular godwit with white wing patches catches his eye, and we leave the boy on the beach and follow the godwit on the long journey north, following an ancient invisible pathway. The journey is not all smooth going as the birds discover that their usual landscape has changed into a human-scape concrete jungle of buildings and roads, and they are forced to find another place to refuel before they take flight again toward their northerly destination.

There, the godwit with white wing patches finds a mate, and soon they have four perfect eggs, and then four newly hatched chicks until the hungry fox appears. Only one chick survives by disappearing into the colours of the land…

Circle-collage-1-1020X500

The days grow cold and finding food is harder. The time is right, and the flock of godwits leave as one, following an ancient invisible pathway high above the clouds back to the place where mud and sand become sea. A boy chases a dog on the beach, his crutches left on the sand. He still has one wish, and that is to fly.

Circle, written and illustrated by Jeannie Baker, is a feast of visual colour and art that is graced with her distinctive illustrating style of genius. Her story flows like the gentle movement of a bird’s wings and glides with smoothness and peace, filling the reader with wonder at how godwits continue to follow the ancient visible pathway, generation after generation, even as their landmarks disappear in our ever changing world. The Author’s Note and Godwit Migration Map are valuable additions at the end of the book, and feed hungry minds of those who want to know more about these amazing birds that make the longest unbroken journey of any animal in the world.

Truly Foul & Cheesy Body Jokes & Facts, book review

9781925520477.thumb

Title: Truly Foul & Cheesy Body Jokes & Facts
by: John Townsend
illustrated by: David Antram
Publisher: Big Sky Publishing

This hilarious, fact-packed joke book will have young readers laughing as they’re learning. It features dozens of gut-busting gags that children can share with their friends, themed around the gross and gruesome aspects of the human body, along with bite-sized information about the topics covered. Hold onto your sides and dive in!

Q: What does a brain do when it sees a friend across the street?
A: It has a quick brain wave!

Author, John Townsend, makes a statement at the beginning of ‘Truly Foul & Cheesy Body Jokes & Facts’: Our body is totally, amazingly, incredibly, mind-bogglingly, astoundingly, BRILLIANT, and also revolting. After reading his book, I whole heartedly agree.

John has organised the ‘Truly Foul & Cheesy Body Jokes & Facts’ book by body bits and pieces:

Body Secrets
Bacteria
Body Visitors
Sneezes
Stomach
Gooey Innards
You Are What You Eat
Record Breakers
A Whiff Of Trouble
Foul, Cheesy And Breezy
Tales of the Heart
Hairy, Scary, Icky & Sticky
Yucky, Mucky & Unlucky
Warts and All
Skin and Bones
Did You Know…
Dead Bodies
Dead Gruesome Facts
Live Gruesome Stuff
Brainy Stuff
Sleepy Slumbers & Neurotic Nightmares

In each of these body bit and pieces ‘chapters’ are interesting facts before some jokes emerge. A churning of your stomach is almost guaranteed with each page turn. There are also limericks and Cheesy Doctor Sketches to keep you rolling your eyes and giggling.

And for those who love to test their knowledge, there’s a quiz at the back of the book, as well as an index. So if you want to look up snot (kids love these parts), you will find it is mentioned on three pages, and poo (the top kid magnet) is found on four pages.

TF&C_body_spr

Artist, David Antram, has created illustrations that will have children vocalising an ‘Eeeew!’ in some parts. The illustrations are totally suitable for the text and help create impact.

If your child is intrigued by the human body, and most of them are, I can assure you that John Townsend’s book, ‘Truly Foul & Cheesy Body Jokes & Facts’ will make them groan or feel sick out loud. I would gift my children the book for entertainment value, just to watch them pull an assortment of different faces as they read.

Q: What do you call an elephant that never washes?
A: A smellyphant!

You have probably heard that laughter is the best medicine. Laughter gets those happy juices flowing through your body retuning you to some kind of normal (we hope). After teaching for twenty-five years, I can tell you there is nothing better than the sound of children’s laughter, and watching those smiles on the kid’s faces.

Author, John Townsend, has created a hybrid book of serious and funny at the same time – something truly unique, and catering for both children’s thirst for knowledge as well as the need for light heartedness. He has logically organised the ‘Truly Foul & Cheesy Animal Jokes & Facts’ book by animals:

Elephants
Hippopotamuses
Poolicious
Skunks
Birds
Bears
Sloths
Big Cats
Reptiles
Monkeys
Giraffes
Camels
Cows
Frogs
Bats
Kangaroos
Rats
