Baby Band, book review

baby-band

Title: Baby Band
by: Diane Jackson Hill
illustrated by: Giuseppe Poli
Publisher: New Frontier

On a normal day, a baby creates mayhem in an apartment block.

I can’t help but see the resemblance of today’s society in Baby Band by author, Diane Jackson Hill—people living in close proximity to each other, yet not knowing each other. Until the loud crying baby comes along! The baby’s mother tries everything to stop the baby from crying, to no avail. The baby cries and cries until one day – CLANG! – he crashes a pot and lid together. The baby laughs. He does it again. And again. And again. The clang causes a domino effect of other noises from the people in every apartment on level 8.

Each of the pages in the story cleverly adds a new sound, repeating and building up –

CLANG AHHH
CLANG AHHH SQEAK, SQUAWK
CLANG AHHH SQEAK, SQUAWK STOMP
CLANG AHHH SQEAK, SQUAWK STOMP CHA-CHA-CHA
CLANG AHHH SQEAK, SQUAWK STOMP CHA-CHA-CHA DOO WAH
CLANG AHHH SQEAK, SQUAWK STOMP CHA-CHA-CHA DOO WAH
CLANG AHHH SQEAK, SQUAWK STOMP CHA-CHA-CHA DOO WAH WHOMP

The residents spill onto the rooftop of the apartment building and hoot and hustle … except for the baby, who is finally fast asleep.

GPoli Finished Illo Baby Band 2

Baby Band is a fun book. I love the way the pace speeds up as you read, building up and up and up until … nothing (when the baby is asleep). This silence makes a very loud statement in such a noisy book.

Illustrator, Giuseppe Poli, has gifted colourful illustrations to the text that add another layer to the story. Right there, on the faces of the characters, you can see the emotions being felt at each stage. Giuseppe’s illustrations also breathe life from the very beginning, with the calmness before the baby is born, to the loudness of the baby band. I love the hilarious final page. It makes me smile every time I think of it!

Baby Band is a wonderful book. It’s perfect for chorus reading with children, and by adding instruments and actions, this story will be loved by all.

Meet… Sidney Nolan, book review

Title: Meet … Sidney Nolan
by: Yvonne Mes
illustrated by: Sandra Eterovic
Publisher: Random House Australia

Sidney Nolan is one of Australia’s most admired and recognised visual artists. This is the story of how he developed his iconic Ned Kelly series of paintings, brought modernist art to Australia and took Australian art to an admiring international audience.

Sidney Nolan and Ned Kelly. There’s a connection between the two that may be unknown to some Australians. Fortunately, author Yvonne Mes, has highlighted their association and brought Sir Sidney Robert Nolan, OM. AC. (1917-1992) to life in her book, Meet … Sidney Nolan.

At first glance, the cover of the picture book is striking, calling you closer, inviting you to open the pages and look inside. When you do, you won’t be disappointed. Yvonne Mes retells the life of Sidney Nolan with gentle attention at first, reminding me of being called to sit in a group and wait in anticipation for important information. And it is important. It is the story of Sidney Nolan – one of Australia’s leading artists of the 20th century, his work being among the most diverse and prolific in all of modern art. As the story continues, Yvonne uses her words to paint the story of Sidney’s life in your mind, and it is action packed, urging you to turn the pages to find out more. It soon becomes apparent that Sidney Nolan’s life had many twists and turns. He was daring, brave, and a “rebel on the run”.

Yvonne’s story is also a story about persistence. Sidney was turned down with his paintings numerous times, but he never gave up. He “poured his feelings about war and violence onto the hardboard. He poured the adventures of his youth. He poured his modernist ideas. And he poured his secrets that would forever remain hidden behind the Ned Kelly’s mask”.

Illustrator, Sandra Eterovic, has created vibrant, stunning illustrations, and you can’t help but notice the style is somewhat similar to Sidney Nolan’s painting style which is rich in colour, and striking in composition. I applaud Sandra’s work. She honoured Sidney Nolan with her illustrations.

I highly recommend Meet … Sidney Nolan as a valuable resource for informing, educating and celebrating the life and wondrous achievements of one of Australia’s significant modern artists, Sidney Nolan, as well as introducing students to the concept of modernism in art.

Yvonne Mes referred to Sidney Nolan in the her story as, “he painted many magnificent stories”. I believe Yvonne wrote a magnificent story about Sidney Nolan. This is one of my books to treasure.

Tommy Bell Bushranger Boy – Outback Adventure, book review

ImageResize

Title: Tommy Bell Bushranger Boy – Outback Adventure
by: Jane Smith
Publisher: Big Sky Publishing

Tommy Bell’s safe outback holiday on a farm with Martin and Combo is turned upside down when Martin finds a pair of magic old bushranger’s boots. This time, when Tommy’s cabbage-tree hat sends him back to the past, his friend Martin is right there beside him.
The boys join their new friend, Harry, and his gang on a long cattle-droving expedition across Outback Australia. For once it seems as if a journey to the past might be pure, fun adventure, without any risk of running into bushrangers. But why did Harry lie about his past? And who are the ‘thievin’’ McKenzies? It looks like Tommy and Martin’s ‘Outback Adventure’ might be more dangerous than they expected …

Australian history has never been more interesting. Author, Jane Smith, has captured the life of bushranger, Harry Readford, with accurate observation through the eyes of young characters, Tommy Bell and Martin.

Tommy is invited to the middle of nowhere by his friend, Martin. He finds himself at Bowen Downs Station, right in the middle of Queensland. Tommy becomes concerned when Martin discovers a pair of old boots in a cave. He throws on his cabbage tree hat at the same time that Martin puts on the old boots as he is worried about what will happen to his friend. His suspicions of a time machine are confirmed when they go back to 1870. Tommy is well acquainted with the time machine, as his secret treasured hat is also one, and has already taken him on other history adventures.

Tommy and Martin find themselves part of the famous Harry Readford’s gang on a long cattle droving expedition across outback Australia. When Tommy and Martin discover that the cattle are stolen, they choose to return to the present. But the adventure doesn’t stop there…

Tommy Bell Bushranger Boy – Outback Adventure, is the fourth book in the Tommy Bell, Bushranger Boy collection – a remarkable Australian series where fictional characters watch Australian history unfold before their eyes. I highly recommend it for educational institutions and independent readers.

The Magic in Dress-Ups, book review

Title: The Magic in Dress-Ups
written & illustrated by: Chrissy Byers
Publisher: Books by Chrissy Byers

Written to inspire imaginative play, this rhyming recount depicts the adventures of two small girls who create costumes from household junk and craft supplies.

Ending in a challenge, it is the perfect resource for Early Childhood Educators.

Scissors, card and some glue. What can we do?
From the very beginning of Chrissy Byers picture book, The Magic in Dress-Ups, children will be inspired to create. As you read the rhythmic, rhyming text, you will be carried away with imagination, feeling the excitement with each construction from bits and pieces from around the house.

Chrissy’s illustrations are colourful and multi-levelled, inviting a closer inspection about what materials are being used and predicting what they will become with the dress-up. On further analysis, pages in juxtaposition will reveal what the characters are doing in real life of the left, and what they are imagining in their make-believe world on the right. Clever!

I can see this book for young children being read over and over again. It would make a wonderful introduction to an art lesson to inspire children to create their own dress-ups and designs from craft supplies and recyclable materials.

The Magic in Dress-Ups will make children feel upbeat, and it will have you following the flow of colourful magic stars as they weave their way over the pages leaving you with a lovely touch of happiness.

The story ends with ‘Scissors, card and some glue. What can you do?’  There’s a challenge for kids, right there!

Curly Tales, book review

curly tales

Title: Curly Tales – stories with a short twist
by: Bill Condon
illustrated by: Dave Atze
Publisher: Big Sky Publishing

Let your imagination soar with these funny fables about the extraordinary adventures of ordinary animals. Laugh out loud and enjoy twisted tales of a super smart cow, a daredevil flea, an earthworm who daydreams of being an anaconda, and many more.

Author, Bill Condon, has written 14 short stories that have an unexpected twist at the end of the tale. Interwoven into the story are classic proverbs that you don’t see coming until the finale of the short story, and then these have fun with word play.

The short stories are perfect for one a day stories, or for the avid reader, to read the entire book in one go. Illustrator, Dave Atze, has captured the sense of humour of the words with zest in his illustrations, making me want to take out my textas and colouring-in pencils and add my own signature of colour splash for each short story.

9781925520590-2

At the end of the book is a section titled: Proverbs, Sayings, Wisdoms and Advice. This is a much needed addition, as I feel that children of the last two generations are not at all familiar with proverbs, or even fables that have a moral to the story.

Curly Tales is an enjoyable book of short stories that can be used to introduce children to proverbs, as well as using a play on words of the proverbs used, inviting them into the world of 680 (that I found) once familiar proverbs and sayings (http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/proverbs.html) that were well known around the world, once upon a time.
